Gingerbread Cottage Competition is a Sweet Holiday Experience
…and a benefit for Habitat for Humanity
It can be a very sweet holiday experience — building a Gingerbread cottage. The heavenly aroma of gingerbread mixed with the spicy scent of gum drops, peppermint buttons, and licorice bits, can make for a sweet and charming holiday centerpiece. And, the entire family’s participation in building the house can be a very special, and sweet, experience.
Would it be sweeter if you built it for someone else to enjoy? That’s what South Puget Sound Habitat for Humanity is hoping. The organization is sponsoring the first “Gingerbread Holiday Cottages Competition” Saturday and Sunday, November 29-30. In conjunction with the Olympia Downtown Association’s “Kickoff for the Holidays” festivities in downtown Olympia, the Gingerbread Cottages will be on view 12-5PM in the ballroom of the Olympia Hotel at 116 Legion Way.
All professional bakers, sponsored “creators,” and individuals (including families, children, church groups, etc.) are invited to enter the competition. For a nominal application fee, you can compete for first, second and third place rankings in each of the three competitive levels. There will also be an opportunity for visitors to vote for their favorite cottage by buying a $1 ticket for the “People’s Choice” award.
All judging will be based on the overall appearance, originality, seasonal theme, craftsmanship, architecture, and adherence to the contest rules. Cottages in the “professional” category will be placed in silent auction, with the final bids announced Sunday afternoon.

Businesses are also invited to help sponsor the event. Sponsorship guarantees prominent placement of your logo and mention of your business, as well as possession of the first place “professional” cottage.
